Who discovered the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin vaccine?

The Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine was discovered by French bacteriologists Albert Calmette and Camille Guérin. After 13 years of research, it was first given to a child in 1921.

Calmette and uérin created the vaccine using a weakened strain of Mycobacterium bovis, a bacterium closely related to the one that causes tuberculosis (TB).

Process:

They gradually weakened the bacteria through repeated subculturing over several years to make it safe for use.

The vaccine was named BCG, which stands for Bacillus Calmette-Guérin, in honor of its discoverers.
