Detailed Solution

Four schoolchildren discovered the Lascaux Cave paintings in France.
On September 12 1940, the passage to the Lascaux Cave was found by an 18-year-old when his dog, Robot, slipped in a hole. He came back with three friends to the spot. They entered the cave via a 50-foot (15-meter) tunnel that they thought would be a rumoured hidden entrance to the neighbouring Lascaux Manor. Instead, the teenagers found that there were animal carvings all over the cave walls. The cave network was made public on July 14, 1948, and the first archaeological studies focused on the Shaft a year later. By 1955, the paintings had been harmed by the carbon dioxide, heat, humidity, and other pollutants that 1,200 people each day caused. As a result, the cave was made publically unavailable in 1963.
