Bal Gangadhar Tilak edited the Marathi newspaper Kesari which became a critic of British rule. It rose to prominence as one of the most vocal critics of British authority. "Freedom is my birthright, and I shall have it," Tilak proclaimed. He popularised the Ganesh Chaturthi festival and the birth anniversary of Shivaji to instil historical pride among Indians.
