The President of India is elected by all the Members of the Parliament and the Members of State Legislative Assemblies. The nominated members play no part in the election of the President. The President's election is conducted indirectly because the President is only a nominal executive, and the real powers are vested in the council of ministers headed by the Prime Minister. The members of the State Legislative Assemblies are also included in the indirect election because the Parliament, dominated by one political party, would have invariably chosen a candidate from that party, and such a President could not represent the States of the Indian Union. And the nominated members are excluded as they are not direct representatives of the will of the people.
