Santiniketan was established by Rabindranath Tagore. He started the institution in 1901. In childhood Tagore hated going to school. So he wanted to set up a school where the child could feel happy, where they could identify and explore thoughts. His experience of school days in Calcutta shaped his ideas of education. He was against the western schooling system where tough discipline made self-learning impossible. According to him teachers had to be imaginative and should understand the child, and help develop curiosity. Tagore had a view of creative learning which was to be developed from within the country. So he set up his school which was 100 kilometres away from Calcutta, in a rural area. And the institution was called Santiniketan.
