Who experimentally proved that the green part of the plants release oxygen, using an aquatic plant?

Jan Ingenhousz (1730-1799) showed that sunlight is essential for a plant process that purifies the air fouled by burning candles or breathing animals. He performed an elegant experiment with an aquatic plant and observed the formation of small bubbles around its green parts when exposed to bright sunlight. Later, he identified these bubbles as oxygen. Thus, he demonstrated that only the green parts of plants could release oxygen through photosynthesis.
