Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay created the image of Bharat Mata. Bankim is a famous Indian author, and his novels firmly established prose as a literary vehicle for the Bengali language. Thus, he helped to create a school of fiction on the European model in India. He was a deputy magistrate in the Indian civil service from 1858 till his retirement in 1891. Nationalism and Hinduism blended in him, and his ideology was exemplified in the song "Vande Mataram" ("Hail to thee, Mother") from his novel Nandamah, which later became the mantra ("hymn") and anthem of Hindu India in its war for independence.
