Detailed Solution

Joseph Stalin forced the peasants to do collective farming in 1929. Kolkhoz was the other name for collective farming in Russia. He started the collectivisation programme. The profits of kolkhoz were shared among the peasants. The benefits of collective farming were more than individual farming. Those who couldn't afford the implements now had access to it. This helped the government because that period had seen shortages of food grains. Joseph Stalin believed that the Kulaks were responsible for the grain shortage which happened in Russia from 1927-1928. Therefore, it became necessary to eliminate them. They were considered an enemy of the poorer peasants.
