Maximilien Robespierre formed the Jacobin Club. It was established on November 19, 1789, as The Jacobin Club, the Society of the Friends of the Constitution. Originally made up only of representatives from Brittany, the Friends of Civic Participation began to accept non-deputies who supported the reforms in France. Amongst these 1,200 men, Robespierre discovered a supportive following. The Jacobin philosophy was equality before the law. The Reign of Terror, when more than ten thousand individuals were tried and put to death in France, was a period of the club’s political domination.
