Detailed Solution

The third estate formed the National Assembly in France in 1789.
Louis XVI convened a meeting of the Estates General on May 5, 1789, to approve plans for increased taxes. The 600 members of the third estate were forced to stand at the back. The third estate's wealthier and more educated members served as its representatives. Women, artisans, and peasants were excluded from the gathering. However, the 40,000 letters the delegates brought stated their complaints and demands. The Estates General of 1789 ended when the Third Estate established the National Assembly and, against the King's wishes, asked the other two estates to join. This served as a sign that the French Revolution had begun.
