Detailed Solution

Giuseppe Mazzini formed a secret society named Young Italy in 1831 to reach his goal of reunifying Italy. Italy was a divided country in terms of politics. The Austrian Habsburgs governed the northern part of the kingdom, the Pope ruled the central region, and the Spanish Bourbons family ruled the southern part. The language, too, varied from one location to the next. In a nutshell, there was little togetherness and little feeling of a shared identity or nationalism. Only one of Italy's seven states, Sardinia Piedmont, was controlled by an Italian Princely House.
