Santiniketan was founded by Rabindranath Tagore in 1901.
Tagore dreaded going to school as a youngster. It was unpleasant and suffocating to him. He thought the school as a prison because he could never achieve what he wanted. Tagore's opinions about education were affected by his time in school in Calcutta. He intended to establish a school where the child would be happy, free to be creative, and allowed to explore her ideas and wants as she grew older. Therefore, he decided to build his school 100 kilometres outside Calcutta, in a rural area. Moreover, he viewed it as an abode of peace, Santiniketan, where kids may develop their inner creativity while living in harmony with nature.
