Pandita Ramabai founded widows’ homes at Poona. Pandita Ramabai was a renowned Sanskrit expert. She had a feeling that Hinduism was being oppressive toward women. So she wrote a book about the problems faced by upper-caste women. Then she founded a widows’ home at Poona, to provide shelter to widows who were ill-treated by their husbands’ relatives. In widow's homes, women were trained, and as a result, they were able to support themselves financially. Orthodox in Indian society were against this program because they felt that the development of Hindu women would corrupt Hindu culture. But by the 19th-century women were activated. Many started working and taking part in the reform movements.
