Detailed Solution

Victor Emmanuel II reigned as Monarch of Sardinia from 1849 to 17 March 1861, when he became the first unified King of Italy since the 6th century, a position he held until his death in 1878. On March 17, 1861, a national parliament made up of deputies elected from all over the peninsula declared the kingdom of united Italy in Turin, the Piedmont capital of Sardinia. Due to the failure of the revolutionary upheavals in 1831 and 1848, Sardinia-Piedmont and its monarch King Victor Emmanuel II were given the responsibility of bringing the Italian nations together through war. Victor Emmanuel supported Giuseppe Garibaldi's Thousand Expedition (1860-1861), which resulted in the quick fall of southern Italy's Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.
