Basavanna initiated the Virashaiva movement. He hoisted the rebel banner against the Varnashrama. He oversaw the conception and execution of every aspect of the religion. Every step of the action was planned and executed under his supervision. He was responsible for setting up Allama Prabhu to preside over the adherents' discussions in the Shivanubhava Mantapa. Once more, he organized the people required to bring the matter through to a successful conclusion. Above all, by his own model conduct, he provided a bright example of the Bhakti (unwavering devotion to God) path. For all of these and numerous more reasons, Basavanna is regarded as the precursor of Virashaivism.
