Lord Dalhousie Introduced the Doctrine of Lapse in India's Governor-General from 1848 to 1856. The doctrine explained that any princely state under the company's vassalage would have its territory annexed if the state's ruler did not produce an heir. Many Indians considered the doctrine and its application to be illegitimate. According to this, no adopted son of the Indian ruler could be declared heir to the kingdom. Only his foster father's personal property and estates would be passed down to the adopted son. The Doctrine of Lapse was one of the underlying causes of the 1857 revolt.
