Who is credited with first observing and naming the cell wall?

Robert Hooke was the first person to observe cells under a microscope and he named them after the small rooms that monks lived in, calling them "cells." While observing a thin slice of cork, Hooke identified the dead cell walls of plant cells and described their structure as resembling small, empty rooms. Although Hooke did not specifically name the cell wall, he was the first to describe its structure and identify its presence in plant cells.
