James Watt improved the steam engine built by Newcomen, and the new engine was patented in 1781. However, he had trouble selling for years because the industrial class were apprehensive about the new invention and its capability. As a result, there were only 321 steam engines in England at the start of the nineteenth century. Initially, it was made to be used in railways, and the other industries didn't even start using steam engines until much later in the century.
