Who is the Father of Mycology?

The Father of Mycology (the study of fungi) is Heinrich Anton de Bary. He was a German botanist and microbiologist who made groundbreaking contributions to the understanding of fungi and plant pathology in the 19th century.

De Bary is best known for discovering the life cycle of fungi and explaining the symbiotic relationships between fungi and algae, leading to the concept of lichens. His experiments proved that fungal spores cause plant diseases, laying the foundation for modern plant pathology.

He also introduced terms like symbiosis and heterothallism and studied several plant diseases such as potato blight caused by Phytophthora infestans. His systematic classification and observations helped distinguish between parasitic, saprophytic, and mutualistic fungi.
