Who Was Qutb-ud-din Aibak?

Qutb-ud-din Aibak was a slave of Muhammad Ghori, a ruler from Afghanistan. Because of his loyalty and military skills, Ghori made him a commander. After Ghori’s death in 1206, Aibak declared himself Sultan of Delhi and started the Mamluk (Slave) Dynasty, the first dynasty of the Delhi Sultanate.

He died in 1210 while playing polo. After his death, his son-in-law Iltutmish succeeded him and further strengthened the Delhi Sultanate.

Even though Muhammad Ghori made early conquests in India, it was Aibak who established an independent kingdom with Delhi as its capital. That is why he is remembered as the founder.
