Kanshi Ram is the founder of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). The Bahujan Samaj Party was India's third-largest national political party. It was founded primarily to represent Bahujans, or people from the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Castes, as well as religious minorities, who make up 85 percent of India's population but are divided into 6000 castes. Kanshi Ram founded it in 1984 and named his protégée Mayawati as his successor in 2001.
