The ruler of Bengal killed the ruler of Kannauj, who was the brother-in-law of Harshavardhana. Rajyashri, the sister of Harsha, was married to Grahavarman, the ruler of Kannauj. King Grahavarman was assassinated by the Gauda (Bengal) king Sasanka, who also imprisoned Rajyashri. To fight the Gauda King Sasanka, Harsha formed an alliance with the King of Kamarupa, Bhaskaravarman. Sasanka was defeated by Harshavardhan and Bhaskaravarman. Then, Harsha succeeded to the throne as king of Kannauj.
