In 1860, Giuseppe Garibaldi led the expedition to the Southern part of Italian unification. He was accompanied by his soldiers and his “Red Shirt Army” members. They marched to the kingdom of Sicily. They won the support of the local peasants in the region and were successful in managing to drive out the Spanish rulers. In the Southern part and 1867, Giuseppe Garibaldi went to Rome with him to protect the papal states. A French Garrison was stationed there, and Garibaldi managed to overcome them. The Papal states then soon joined Italy.
