Mahatma Gandhi led the liberation struggle and was committed to resolving societal issues. He was opposed to the sin of untouchability. He advocated a society founded on equality for all castes. He considered untouchables to be Harijans or God's offspring. He also conducted a satyagraha to abolish the sin of untouchability by allowing them to enter temples and use public wells, roads, schools, and tanks. He also cleaned the toilet to honour Bhangi's work. He stated that if untouchability is not removed and egalitarian society is not built, Swaraj will not come to India for another hundred years.
