Alluri Sitaram Raju led the Non-Cooperation Movement from Gudem hills. His vision was to achieve the right of the tribals to use forest produce, graze their cattle and collect fuelwood and fruits for their livelihood. He persuaded people to wear khadi and give up drinking, which was inspired by Gandhi's satyagraha. He also asserted that India could only be liberated with the use of force and not non-violence. Raju was captured and executed in 1924 and, with time, became a folk hero.
