The ideas of the right to life or freedom were circulating extensively in 18th century France, with discussions about these ideas being held in salons and coffee houses. Still, the people were hypocritical because slavery in the French colonies was hardly criticised. Liberty, equality and fraternity became the slogan for the French Revolution, but this was not initially extended to the enslaved people in the French colonies. Moreover, the National Assembly did not support its abolition for fear of angering the businessman whose fortune depended on the vibrant slave trade between France, Africa and the Americas. Finally, the Convention, which acted as the legislature of France, passed laws to free all the enslaved people in the French overseas colonies.
