Detailed Solution

Russia lost in the Russo-Japanese War.
The Russian Empire and the Empire of Japan engaged in the Russo-Japanese War in 1904 and 1905. Emperor Nicholas II decided to stay in the war and wait for the results of critical naval engagements, although Russia had sustained several defeats. He believed that Russia might triumph if it continued to fight. However, as the likelihood of success dwindled, he pursued the conflict to prevent a "humiliating peace" and thus protect Russia's honour. However, the Russian autocracy's reputation was severely harmed due to the country's heavy losses and casualties for a cause that ended in a humiliating defeat. Furthermore, it led to growing domestic unrest, ultimately resulting in the 1905 Russian Revolution.
