Delhi became the first capital of a kingdom when the Chauhans (also known as Chahamanas) of Ajmer overthrew the Tomara Rajputs in the middle of the twelfth century. Under the control of the Chauhans and Tomaras, Delhi expanded into an important commercial centre. Many prosperous Jaina merchants who lived in the city constructed some temples. It was common to use the dehliwal coins that were produced here. Delhi grew into a capital that ruled over sizable portions of the subcontinent with the founding of the Delhi Sultanate at the beginning of the thirteenth century.
