Detailed Solution

Matthew Boulton and James Watt manufactured the new model of the steam engine. James Watt and Matthew Boulton made improvements to the steam engine built by Newcomen, and the new engine was patented in 1781. However, they had trouble selling for years. England had only 321 steam engines at the start of the nineteenth century. Eighty of these engines were used in the cotton industry, nine in the wool industry, and the remaining ones were in mining, canal construction, and iron fabrication. The other industries didn't start using steam engines until much later in the century. Therefore, manufacturers were sluggish to adopt even the most powerful new technology that greatly increased labour productivity.
