Detailed Solution

Rousseau is an enlightenment thinker whose writings created conditions for a revolution in France. After Rousseau's birth, his mother died within a few days. His father was a third-generation watchmaker, and young Rousseau grew up around artisans. Although he had little in the way of formal education, he became an avid reader. Rousseau spent most of his 20s travelling, doing various small tasks while studying and educating himself. Then, in his 30th year, he moved to Paris, where he befriended fellow philosopher Denis Diderot and published an article in Diderot's famous Enlightenment Encyclopaedia.
