In the early half of the 20th century, many classes and groups of Indians were joining forces in a common struggle for freedom as a result of growing resentment towards colonial rule. The Congress, led by Mahatma Gandhi, made an effort to organise movements for independence out of the concerns of the people. The nationalists attempted to create a sense of national solidarity through such movements. However, as we have seen, a variety of groups and classes, with a range of hopes and expectations, took part in these movements. Freedom from colonial authority also meant different things to different people because their grievances were diverse. Congress made constant efforts to settle disputes and make sure that one group's demands would not alienate another.
