Peasants persuaded Mahatma Gandhi to visit Champaran. The indigo production collapsed in Bengal after the revolt of 1857. So, the commission shifted it to Bihar to gain profit and expand its production. Mahatma Gandhi returned to India from South Africa in 1915, and then Rajkumar Shukla requested him to come to Champaran. So, Gandhi visited Champaran district in Bihar in 1917 to see the situation of indigo cultivators. After that, the first movement of Mahatma Gandhi, the Champaran movement, was started against the indigo planters.
