The Jatakas that were probably composed by ordinary people were written down and preserved by the Buddhist monks.
The Jatakas contain the stories of the previous birth forms of the Gautama Buddha in both animal and human forms. The ancient inscriptions of India were filled with references to the Jataka tales. These Jatakas are primarily present in the prose form in the Sutta Pitaka. It depicts Buddha as a high-ranking official in all his past lives. It also contains some lives of the disciples of the Buddha. Many of the Jatakas also preach about the Buddha’s teachings and how he attained enlightenment.
