Detailed Solution

The Santhals reared cocoons in Hazaribagh. Throughout the eighteenth century, Indian silk was highly sought after in European markets. Indian silk was pricey for its superior quality, and exports from India quickly increased. East India Company officials made efforts to stimulate silk production as the market expanded to meet the rising demand. In Hazaribagh(in the present-day state of Jharkhand), the Santhals reared cocoons. The silk traders sent out their agents to lend money to the locals and collect cocoons. The growers received between Rs 3 and Rs 4 for every thousand cocoons. These were then delivered to Burdwan or Gaya, where they were priced five times higher.
