Detailed Solution

Rabindranath Tagore returned his knighthood as a mark of the Jallianwala bagh massacre protest. It was an enclosed ground with high walls on all sides. A large gathering had taken place there: some were protesting against the Government’s Rowlatt Act, while some were celebrating the Punjabi festival of Baisakhi. In response to this, General Dyer of Britain, without warning, asked his troops to block the exit and open fire on the unarmed crowd. This event shocked the conscience of the whole nation. It led to a horrific human tragedy leading to around a thousand deaths.
