Detailed Solution

Dwarkanath Tagore set up six joint-stock companies in Bengal in the 1830s and 1840s.
The British in India started shipping opium and importing tea from China in the late 18th century. This transaction involved a lot of Indian merchants. Dwarkanath Tagore was a contemporary Bengali Brahmin and a well-known social figure in Kolkata. He pioneered the establishment of several economic ventures in collaboration with British traders, including banking, insurance, and shipping. Before becoming an industrial investor, Dwarkanath built a fortune in the Chinese trade. In the 1830s and 1840s, he founded six joint-stock firms.
