Giuseppe Mazzini attempted to develop a coherent plan for the unifying Italian Republic in the 1830s. Mazzini claimed that God created nations to be the fundamental social institutions of humanity. Therefore, Italy could no longer be a patchwork of tiny nations and kingdoms. It had to be united into a single republic as part of a larger international alliance. The foundation of Italian liberty might be this union alone. After his example, secret societies were founded in Germany, France, Switzerland, and Poland. He also founded a covert organisation called Young Italy to further his objectives. The ruling class in this area saw a united Italy as providing them with the opportunity for political and economic advancement.
