Detailed Solution

Mahatma Gandhi started the Champaran movement.
The Champaran Satyagraha of 1917 was the first popular Satyagraha movement in British India, led by Mahatma Gandhi. It is regarded as a historically significant revolt in the Indian independence movement. During the British colonial period, a farmer's uprising occurred in the Champaran district of Bihar. Farmers were protesting at having to plant indigo for little or no money. When Gandhi returned to India from South Africa in 1915, he witnessed peasants in Northern India being oppressed by Indigo planters. He attempted to use Satyagraha to organise mass uprisings to fight injustice. The Champaran Satyagraha guided India's youth and freedom fighters, who were teetering between moderates and extremists, to achieve freedom from the British colonial power in India.
