He was born in Ranchi and is considered a religious freedom fighter and a folk hero of the Munda tribe. Birsa Munda is still remembered as a heroic figure in many areas of India, like in Jharkhand, Orissa Bihar, West Bengal, and Madhya Pradesh. He was born in 1875 and was also called Dharti Aaba, which means ‘Father of the Earth.’ He was a leader in mobilizing the tribal community against the colonial government. He revolted in favour of tribal people, so that colonial officials introduced new laws which protected the rights of the tribal land and people.
