Al-Biruni was a scholar.
Al-Biruni was born in Khwarizm, present-day Uzbekistan, in 973 AD. He was a learned man with knowledge of languages like Syriac, Arabic, Persian, Hebrew and Sanskrit. He was taken to Ghazni as a hostage by Sultan Mahmud Ghazni. It was here that he became interested in India. By this time, Sanskrit works on astronomy, mathematics and medicine had been translated into Arabic. So he wrote the Kitab-Ul-Hind in Arabic.
