Jones was an expert in law and a linguist. Being a linguist, he studied Greek and Latin at Oxford and knew French and English. He learned Arabic from a friend and also learned Persian. Jones also studied ancient Indian texts on law, philosophy, religion, politics, morality, arithmetic, medicine, and other sciences. He supported the concept of Orientalism.
