Detailed Solution

Dietrich Brandis, a German specialist, was made the first Inspector General of Forests in India. The British were concerned that the uncontrolled tree-felling by traders and the indiscriminate usage of wood by locals would ruin the forest since they needed it to build ships and railways. Brandis understood that people needed to be educated in the science of conservation and that a suitable system needed to be implemented to manage the woods. Furthermore, it was necessary to create guidelines for using forest resources. So that the forest could be protected from producing timber, tree-felling and grazing have to be prohibited.
