Detailed Solution

William Adam was asked to prepare a report on the progress of pathshalas by the British. He found out there were not more than twenty disciples in each pathshala, and there were over twenty lakh pathshalas spread over the districts of Bihar and Bengal. The education system in pathshalas was a flexible form of learning. There were no uniforms, no printed books, no benches, no chairs, no separate classes, no fixed annual fee, and no timetable was followed regularly. The students sat together, and the teacher, referred to as the Guru, decided the subjects to be taught. Pathashalas were established by wealthy people, the local community, or the Guru.
