Hitler gave the task of reviving the economy to economist Hjalmar Schacht, who used a state-funded programme to create jobs to achieve full employment and production. The Volkswagen and the renowned German superhighways were both products of this effort. Schacht consented to generate money for the Nazi Party. Until 1943, he served as Minister without Portfolio. Schacht was interned in a concentration camp after the 1944 attempt on Hitler's life due to his connections to conservative resistance figures. Even though Schacht was cleared in the Nuremberg International Military Tribunal, the German authorities had him detained again and accused him of further crimes. Finally, despite receiving an eight-year prison term, he was released.
