Birsa Mundawas a tribal leader of Chotanagpur region. He declared himself as a person who is appointed by God to save his people from trouble and to free his people from the slavery of dikus, meaning outsiders. He was said to have miraculous powers and was an extraordinary person. It was said that he can cure all diseases. He asked the Mundas to give up drinking liquor, clean their village, and stop believing in witchcraft and sorcery. He also stood against the Hindu landlords and missionaries. He wanted to reform his tribal society.
