Detailed Solution

A Chapman was a seller of penny chapbooks, a type of printed street literature, a small folded booklet written on one sheet and folded into eight, twelve, sixteen, or twenty-four pages. Since the mid-nineteenth century, the popularity of many chapbooks has long been declining due to competition for cheaper newspapers. The books were sold by Chapman, a licensed or official merchant. Typically, chapbooks were small pocket-sized booklets made for the poor, always fitted at the price of pies and saddle stitches, but for the upper classes, there were chapbooks with individual monograms made of leather.
