Menocchio, an Italian miller, was hauled up twice and eventually executed but before this he began to read books that were available in his locality. He interpreted the message of the Bible and formulated a different view of God that angered the Roman Catholic Church. He was executed because in mediaeval times it was seen as a threat to the right of church to decide on what should be believed and what should not and if not followed were severely punished. However, such print and popular religious literature stimulated many individuals by deciphering the faith even among the little informed working people.
