Muhammad Tughlaq was known as the 'Man of ideas but a failure as an administrator.
Muhammad bin Tughluq was an intelligent man who studied physics, math, and philosophy.
Although his concepts of "token currency" and "central capital" were sound, they failed as administrative solutions. After defeating the Mongol Army, he intended to build up a sizable army to assault Transoxiana. However, his campaign in Kashmir was a failure. He was forced to disband his considerable army and his intentions to subdue the Mongols. He requested that everyone in Delhi-i-Kuhna leave the city to make room for his troops and go to the new capital Daulatabad in the south. It led to yet another failure and anger among the populace. He increased taxes when there was a famine in the region to feed his army. The Ganga-Yamuna belt experienced widespread insurrection as a result. He instituted a "token currency" to regulate pricing. Although they had little faith in these new coins, they managed to outwit the monarch and use them to pay their taxes. This inexpensive money was equally simple to counterfeit. The "token currency" had to be recalled in the end.
