Detailed Solution

Peter Norman was an Australian athlete. In the 1968 Olympics, he won a silver medal in the 200-metre dash. He wore a human rights badge on his shirt at the event to show his support for Tommie Smith and John Carlos in their protest against racial discrimination. They attempted to call international attention to the United States' brutal racial prejudice. However, the International Olympic Association ruled that Carlos and Smith had violated the Olympic spirit by making a political statement. Norman also suffered from his actions and was not selected to represent Australia in the next Olympic Games.
