Sir Henry Morton Stanley was a journalist who worked in Central Africa.
The New York Herald hired explorer and journalist Stanley to track down explorer and missionary Livingston, who had been in Africa for several years. Like other European and American explorers of the day, Stanley travelled with weapons, enlisted the aid of local hunters, warriors, and labourers, engaged in combat with local tribes, explored the African landscape, and surveyed various areas. The conquest of Africa was aided by these explorations. Geographical explorations were not solely motivated by a sincere desire to learn more about science. They were closely related to imperial projects.
